After starting as a five-piece, Spine Readers developed into a Bellingham power trio specializing in all sub-genres of pop music. Their music was wonderfully unpredictable, crashing from melodic rock to crazed funk to thrashing punk-rock.

Fronted by the theatrical vocals of Sean Meyer, the group never failed to be both impressive and entertaining. Meyer’s untimely death brought the band to an end, and they released the Lab Results album in his memory.

Artist profile: Guitar Cult

Guitar Cult is a group of Seattle area guitarists assembled by Ben McAllister to play his compositions, which present a mixture of minimalism and maximalism by bringing together seven or so guitars with a drum kit.

McAllister’s background runs back to the early 80s, when he played in Medicine Hat, and has extended through a number of bands playing various styles of music, but he has also studied music theory and composition, and Guitar Cult fulfills some of that ambition.

Obol is a Seattle band that was founded by singer, bassist, and keyboardist Barry Craig. Barry bounced around writing for various musical projects in Seattle for years, trying to find a home for his particular mix of dark and cinematic art rock.

Obol have 3 official releases: the fun and aggressive Revoluçión (2013), the dark and melancholy Dreaming (2019), and Quizshow (2021), a love / hate letter to the pandemic.

Seaprog and Substation present…

Clearly Beloved at Seaprog 2018, photo by Danette DavisSeaprog is proud to partner with Substation to bring you the first of what we hope will be many “Seaprog Presents” events. On Thursday, April 11, we’ve got three Seaprog veteran bands scheduled to play a show.

Moraine (2013, 2018) is one of the best known progressive bands in the Northwest, and (obviously) no stranger to our stages. But even if you’ve seen them before, it’s worth catching them now. They’ve got new material, and are fresh off their successful shows opening for the legendary Soft Machine.

Fang Chia (2014) is an eclectic group from Tacoma that combines rock, jazz, electronics, and more into a unique sound all their own. You never know what this band is going to come up with next.

Clearly Beloved (2018) was one of the highlights of last year’s festival, with their catchy, clever, artistic take on progressive folk rock. They don’t perform very often, so don’t miss this chance to catch them on stage.

For quite a few years now, the Substation has been one of Seattle’s best venues for live music, presenting a wide range of artists from many genres. Be sure to check out the Facebook event page for more details and to RSVP.

Artists profile: Shimmertraps

Shimmertraps is a band based in Bellingham. After quietly releasing their debut album in 2017, Shimmertraps spent the next two years pouring their time and creative energy into what they consider to be, “our most collaborative album yet.” With the addition of 2 new members to the project, “LOOK!“ (2020) became an exciting change of pace for the band. Together, they wrote, recorded, mixed and produced the entire album in their outskirt Bellingham living room. Evolving from their dreamy soundscapes and fuzzy lofi production, Shimmertraps boldly introduces their punchy, disco-focused rhythms paired with a plethora of wide and luscious sounding synths across the sonic journey of “LOOK!”. The band has proven to blend a variety of different genres and sounds into a captivating concoction, further defining the sound of Shimmertraps.
