Seaprog 2022 wrapup

In many ways, our 2022 event was the odd one out — a one-night show versus a full weekend, at a new venue, and of course the fact that Covid was still with us in many ways. Still, we made the best of it, and there was some great music to be had for the small but enthusiastic crowd at Madame Lou’s in Belltown.

The evening began with Portland’s Rainbow Face.

This band was an unknown quantity to many attendees, though their debut album has been out since 2020. Their take on progressive rock is loud and aggressive, with more than a little punk attitude.

But we’re all about bringing the variety, and their music is complex enough for old prog-heads to get into.

Next up was a long-time favorite, Cheer-Accident. This was not their first time at one of our festivals, and as much as we hate to repeat ourselves, the fact that the musicians in Cheer-Accident are not the kind who repeat themselves!

This is a rather different lineup than we saw when they played our 2018 festival, and most of the musicians played more than one instrument.

But all of the instrument-switching was part of the show, and resulted in a great variety of sounds and textures.

This set was truly extraordinary, easily one of the best performances at any of our events. You just never knew what was going to happen next.

There were a few tracks recognizable to those familiar with Cheer-Accident’s albums, but much of the set seemed arranged just for us.

The evening finished with Bent Knee, though not exactly the Bent Knee we expected. Two of the members — guitar and bass — came down with Covid and were unable to make the journey from Boston, so the remaining four members did their best to adapt to the situation.

As it happens, Bent Knee was already in the process of changing to this new four-piece version, as the other two were already planning to leave. The timing of our event and the unexpected illnesses forced them to make the transition sooner than planned.

The performance had some of the magic the band is known for, though slanted more towards atmospheres and grooves. Some of the material came from new songs that the band was just working on.

Again, we’d like to offer our sincere thanks to all the brave music lovers who came out for this event. It would be dishonest to say that the turnout wasn’t a disappointment — but certainly no one who came was disappointed. Thanks to the staff and management at Madame Lou’s, our volunteers, and the good people at Shunpike and 4Culture who helped to make this possible

Bent Knee and Cheer-Accident slated for Seaprog 2022

We’re pleased to confirm that our headlining artists this year will be Bent Knee and Cheer-Accident. These two bands have been consistently creative and innovative, and easily rank among the most prominent American art rock bands. They have both made careers of defying expectations and going their own ways regardless of fashion trends. They will be joined by two more bands, which we hope to announce soon.

Cheer-Accident is no stranger to Seaprog — their performance was one of the highlights of our 2018 festival. And they haven’t been sitting still since then. Their latest album, Here Comes the Sunset, is their 24th full-length release. Yes, you read that right: 24 albums, going back to their debut in 1986.

We’ve been trying to get Bent Knee at Seaprog for quite a while now, but scheduling has never worked out until now. We are absolutely thrilled to bring this band to our stage for what is sure to be a stellar performance. There is quite simply no band on Earth that sounds like Bent Knee, and if you haven’t seen them live before, you’re in for a treat.

We’re working two more artists for the show, which will take place Friday August 5 at Madame Lou’s at the Crocodile. Tickets are now on sale here.

As always, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to 4Culture for their generous support of the arts in Seattle (not just us!) and to our fiscal sponsor, Shunpike.

Seaprog 2022 is coming!

Here’s a welcome shaft of light amid troubled times: Seaprog is back!

After a two-year pandemic hiatus and the permanent loss of our longtime partner venue, the Columbia City Theater, we’re delighted to announce that Seaprog 2022 is scheduled to take place on the Madame Lou’s stage at the ‘new’ Crocodile on Friday, August 5, 2022.

Due to scheduling challenges, Seaprog 2022 will be a single-day event featuring Bent Knee, Cheer-Accident, and Rainbow Face, but with intent to return to a full weekend format in 2023. These three bands will make for an amazing show!

Heartfelt thanks to our fiscal sponsor Shunpike and to 4Culture for their continued support through the long hiatus!

Regarding COVID: Some have asked what the COVID policy will be for the upcoming Seaprog. The venue’s current policy is: “The Crocodile is encouraging all guests to continue to wear masks at all times unless actively eating or drinking.” Seaprog will default to this policy while emphasizing that we strongly prefer that attendees mask up. While we’re in no position to enforce policy, we advise folks to take sensible precautions for their own sake and that of their fellow concertgoers.

With the rise of the new COVID variant, we understand that protocols might shift yet again between now and 8/5. We’ll keep you posted in the event of any change and will abide by whatever protocol is in place at that time. Thanks for your cooperation!

2018 Artist Announcements — Round 1

Seaprog is pleased to announce the first confirmations for the 2018 lineup, which is shaping up to be the best yet, with a set of headliners sure to thrill and amaze: Cheer-Accident, Free Salamander Exhibit, and Bubblemath. In addition, we’ve lined up a wide variety of artists from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia to provide proof that the Northwest is a home for creative music of all stripes.

Cheer-Accident (Chicago) has been one of the most prominent American bands in avant rock for more than a decade, with roots in such pioneers as Henry Cow but a disarming sense of melody and a modern anything-goes attitude.

Carrying on the legacy of the mighty Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Free Salamander Exhibit (Oakland) is a giant among genre-bending bands, straddling avant-metal, free jazz, modern Classical and more in their unique performances.

And while Bubblemath (Minneapolis) has not been the most prolific of bands, with only two albums in 17 years, but those albums stand firmly among the best American progressive releases, bringing together tightly-arranged complexity and ambitious reach with a winking sense of humor.

Since their 2014 appearance, The Mercury Tree (Portland) has been honing their style of adventurous rock music and bringing in microtonal sounds to create something truly unique, so we’re happy to give them an encore appearance on our stage.

Faun Fables is based in the Bay Area, but they occupy a realm far from the mundane world we live in. The duo presents a modern version of acid folk infused with a deep artistic sensibility that’s won them fans around the world.

Seattle’s own Clearly Beloved is a band with a vision involving violins, unpredictable songs, and baking bread.

We’re excited to be presenting our first Vancouver band, Marching Mind, to represent that city’s rich cultural scene with a sound that combines classic prog and edgy 90s rock.

Moraine played the very first Seaprog in 2013, but a lot has changed since then, with new personnel and new material, so they’re due a return engagement. Other Northwest area artists we’ve enlisted include Cantrip, Ocelot Omelet, and Himiko Cloud.

There are more contracts outstanding for other exciting artists, along with a yet-to-be-nailed-down project featuring members of the Seattle Guitar Circle, so make sure to keep paying attention. Ticket sales will be starting soon — look for an announcement in the next few days.

And finally… Seaprog is fiscally sponsored by Shunpike, and donations are tax deductible and eligible for employer-matching funds where available. Please consider helping creative music flourish by contributing to the cause. Ticket sales alone have never covered the costs of putting on the festival, and every little bit helps. Donate here.
